A lot of people come to us with the same questions before booking. Is it safe? Will it hurt? How long do results last? What does it actually cost? This post works through all of them, based on what we hear every day at White and Bright. We believe achieving a brighter smile shouldn't come with guesswork, which is why we're completely transparent about our process. Whether you're prepping for a special event or just looking to shift years of coffee stains, here is everything you need to know before you step into our studio.
What Is Professional Teeth Whitening?
Professional teeth whitening uses a hydrogen peroxide gel applied to the tooth surface. The gel breaks down stain molecules inside the enamel, which is what lifts the colour rather than just scrubbing at the outside. Done at a whitening studio with proper equipment, the results are far more even than anything you'd get from a kit off the shelf.
At White and Bright, we use a 6% hydrogen peroxide gel activated by a cold blue LED light. The LED speeds up the whitening process without generating heat, which is what keeps the treatment comfortable from start to finish. Sessions run for either 60 or 90 minutes depending on which treatment option you book.
Is Teeth Whitening Safe?
Yes, for most people it is. The important thing is using the right gel concentration and applying it properly. Get those two things right and the treatment is well tolerated.
Our 6% hydrogen peroxide formula sits at a lower concentration than what dental clinics sometimes use, which reduces the chance of sensitivity. The gel also contains minerals that help support enamel during the process. Around 98% of our clients finish their session with no discomfort at all. On the rare occasion someone does feel mild sensitivity afterwards, it typically settles within 24 to 48 hours.
Does Teeth Whitening Hurt?
For most people, no. It's one of those things that sounds more daunting than it actually is.
A lot of at-home products cause sensitivity because the gel concentration doesn't suit the individual, or because it sits unevenly across the teeth. With a professional treatment, the gel is applied evenly and the LED light produces no heat, so there's no burning sensation. If you have sensitive teeth, just mention it before your session and we'll work around it.
How Many Shades Whiter Can My Teeth Get?
Results depend on your starting shade, tooth structure, and lifestyle habits. As a general guide, here's what to expect from each treatment:
People who smoke or regularly drink coffee, tea, or red wine tend to start with heavier staining. For them, a longer session or the two-session package usually gives the most noticeable change.
How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last?
Whitening is not permanent. How long results hold depends on what you eat, drink, and whether you smoke.
Most clients keep their results for around six months or more. Staining beverages and smoking speed up how quickly colour returns. Regular brushing, limiting dark drinks, and using a straw where you can all help extend the results. A maintenance session every few months is a practical way to stay on top of it.
What Causes Teeth to Stain?
Staining happens in two ways: on the surface of the tooth or deeper within the enamel. Surface stains come from food and drink and build up gradually. Internal stains develop over time and won't shift with brushing alone.
Common causes include:
Coffee and tea
Red wine
Dark-coloured soft drinks
Tomato-based sauces and curries
Smoking and tobacco
Certain medications, particularly those taken during childhood when teeth were forming
Ageing, which causes enamel to thin and the naturally darker dentine beneath to show through
Professional whitening works on both surface and internal staining, which is why it gets results that toothpastes and strips simply can't match.
How Is Professional Whitening Different From Over-the-Counter Products?
The main differences are gel strength, how evenly the product is applied, and the use of LED technology.
Consumer whitening products sold at chemists in Australia are restricted to very low concentrations of hydrogen peroxide, generally under 0.1%. That's enough to take the edge off surface staining over a few weeks, but it won't touch deeper discolouration. Professional treatments use stronger gels applied evenly across all tooth surfaces, with an LED light to activate the process properly. There's also a trained person overseeing your session, which makes a difference to how the product is used
Can Crowns, Veneers, or Fillings Be Whitened?
It's a fair question, and the answer is a bit more nuanced than a flat yes or no.
Dental restorations don't respond to whitening the same way natural teeth do. Our gel works internally, so it can often bring crowns and fillings back towards their original shade, though it may not match the new colour of your natural teeth exactly. That said, most clients are pleased with how the overall result looks. If your existing dental work is outside the smile line, it won't be affected at all. It's worth letting us know about any crowns, fillings, or veneers before your session so we can give you a realistic idea of what to expect.
How Much Does Professional Teeth Whitening Cost?
Here's a breakdown of our treatments and pricing:
Comparable in-chair whitening at a dental clinic typically runs from $800 to $1,000 or more. We keep our prices accessible without cutting corners on the quality of the treatment.
How Do I Prepare for My Appointment?
There's not much to it. A few things worth doing beforehand:
Brush and floss before you arrive so the gel can cover your teeth evenly
Drink plenty of water in the hours leading up to your session
Skip heavily pigmented food and drinks in the few hours prior
Let us know about any existing dental work, sensitivity, or recent dental procedures
No special diet beforehand, no referral needed. Just show up with clean teeth.
What Should I Eat After Whitening?
Your teeth are more porous in the 48 hours after treatment, which means staining substances can take hold more easily during that window. What you eat and drink in this period matters.
Stick to the white diet for those first two days: light-coloured foods like chicken, fish, rice, pasta, cauliflower, bananas, and plain dairy. Avoid coffee, tea, red wine, dark sauces, and berries. After 48 hours you can go back to eating normally. It's also worth waiting at least an hour after your session before eating anything, and using a straw for dark drinks is a good habit to carry on with longer term.
Who Shouldn't Get Their Teeth Whitened?
Whitening suits most adults, but there are situations where it's better to wait or check with a dentist first:
Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are generally advised to hold off
People under 18, since the enamel is still developing
Anyone with untreated tooth decay or active gum disease
People with significant enamel erosion
Those with heavy internal staining from antibiotics like tetracycline, which tends to be more resistant to standard whitening
If you have any doubts about whether it's the right time, a quick chat with your dentist before booking is the sensible move. For anything specific to our process, you're welcome to get in touch with us directly beforehand.
Still Got Questions? Here's Where to Go Next
Most people find that once they've read through the common questions, the decision is pretty clear. Whitening is low-risk, the treatment is comfortable, and results show up from the first session. Whether you're after a light refresh or want to tackle years of staining from coffee or wine, we work with what you're starting with and go from there.
